Attendance & absences

Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

  • has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays)
  • is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
  • is sick, or has an infectious illness.

Students need to attend school regularly to meet the course requirements of the Higher School Certificate.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counsellor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administration assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or written note as soon as possible and within seven days.

Rolls at Bowral High School

Rolls are marked in Roll Groups at the beginning of each day. On the first day back at school after an absence, students MUST produce an acceptable explanatory note from their parents or carers. The note must be signed, dated and given to the Roll Teacher. If a student is away for 2 days or more without notifying the school of the reason, the School Assistant for Rolls will seek to contact home. Parents and carers can also reply to the school SMS on the day of the absence or phone the school on the morning of the absence to notify office staff.

Leaving School Grounds

Students are not allowed to leave the school grounds without permission from the school. To obtain permission, students must provide a note dated and signed by their parents or caregivers to the Front Office before 8.55am who will then authorise a "Permission To Leave School" slip to the student. Students with permission must sign out at the Front Office.

Lesson Attendance

Lesson attendance is monitored by teachers who maintain an accurate roll for each class they teach.  Unaccountable student absences (Truancy) are recorded and forwarded to the Front Office.

Students are not permitted to be out of class without a signed note. Permission is only to be granted for exceptional reasons. Lunch Passes are not issued by the school.

Year 12 students may leave under Flexible Attendance arrangements cited below but they may not leave simply for lunch.

Flexible Attendance ( Year 12/Mature Age Students Only)

Students are permitted to enter the school grounds before their first lesson and leave after their last lesson.

Students granted Flexible Attendance have ID cards and must sign in and out each time.

During non-lesson periods students are to use the Senior Area or designated Homework areas including the Library and Senior Study.

Students may forfeit these arrangements as a result of a violation.

On forfeiting Flexible Attendance the parents of the student will be notified.

Parents will also be notified of the Reinstatement of Flexible Attendance arrangements.
